Description

Independence Day celebrations changed dramatically over the course of the 1800s, from civic-sponsored parades and long-winded speeches to a day of relaxation best spent picnicking or watching baseball. Dr. Adam Criblez, associate professor in the department of history and anthropology at Southeast Missouri State University, explains how this transformation took place, and he’ll discuss what a typical Fourth of July celebration looked like in the 19th-century Midwest.
