Lee Alexander McQueen (1969 — 2010) redefined contemporary fashion with his extraordinary ability to blend exquisite craftsmanship with intimate and imaginative storytelling. Drawing from historical as well as autobiographical sources, McQueen created elaborately expressive runway presentations that juxtaposed his virtuosic gifts as a tailor with the conceptual depth and avant-garde experimentation of performance art. Inspired by nature and technology alike, his work wrested beauty from cutting-edge digital innovations as well as the wild corporeality of the plant and animal world. From the fineness of his cuts to the elaborate drama of his gestalt vision, McQueen’s work continues to speak to us across genres and eras as a result of its profound emotional intensity, masterful craft and capacious artistry.
